What: Habitat for Humanity House Dedication--9 year old philanthropist surprises family with furnishings for their ENTIRE house.
When: Thursday, May 25, 2006, noon
Where: 1837 Logan Ave, Des Moines, IA
Nine-year old Booneville resident Lanna originally hoped to add stuffed animals and potted plants as the final touches to a house that she wanted to help turn into a home for a low-income family she has never met. In a twelve hour a stint, she achieved far more than she expected, rounding up enough goods to furnish a WHOLE house that is being dedicated by Habitat for Humanity on Thursday, May 25th at noon.
Lt. Governor Sally Peterson is scheduled to speak at the dedication, acknowledging area business leaders who helped make this house possible, followed by Lanna W., who will present her stunning acquisitions in surprise fashion to the recipient's of the home.
Lanna is passionate about her cause. "I believe all living things should have homes," she wrote in an essay that evolved into more of a plan on how she can help homeless people and animals.
Last Friday, Lanna put her plan into action. Her mom and dad let her take the day off from school to meet with several Des Moines area businesses to help a single mom and four kids furnish their new home.
Her efforts brought local merchants and community members together. Saturday morning she was invited onto a local news show where she reported some of her results, but asked the public for more help. And help they did. A mom whose young son died recently called up saying she had a bunk bed--just what the family needed--in bold Superman colors for two of the boys.
"I hope other kids will see what I did and realize that they have the power to do it, too," Lanna said. "I learned a lot by doing this , and now I know I can do even more."
Lana had posted her goal to help the homeless on a website for a non-profit organization called "Randomkid" ( www. Randomkid.org). Representatives from Randomkid helped Lana actualize her goal to help others by giving her the tools and skills to develop a successful action plan. "There is something magical about a child who wishes to help others," said Anne Ginther, Randomkid's founder. "Our organization nurtures those children to make their own wishes for a better tomorrow come true."
