A letter from RandomKid's CEO, Talia Leman:
NBC Nightly News is producing a series of reports about the earth's water crisis. They plan to feature this story on the last night (I think it is set for 9/07) as kids "making a difference" to ease thirst around the earth. There are many ways that you can help us make this a really special event that will be etched on the minds of teachers and students all across the nation. It is our hope that by sharing our story, the media will inspire many more to get involved in helping all human beings obtain access to safe water.
How you can help:
Our South African contact is meeting with the headmaster of one of the schools our pump will serve. She will get a sense of what their needs are. We will also work to get a sense of what's practical--in terms of how much two people can bring on the trip.
Ideas: (Please note, We are still waiting to hear back on how many children are at this school, so we can't quote exact costs. If it turns out we get more than enough donations for one of the items below, we reserve the right to reallocate the remaining money to another item mentioned here).
WATER BOTTLES
Our contact highly suggested we bring empty bottles with our labels, for the children to be able to fill up at the pump. These cost us money, and they will likely cost money for extra bulk to transport. But imagine the sheer joy for the USA children to see THEIR water in the hands of their new friends on the other side of the world. And imagine the spark of imagination in the South African children... that kids THEIR AGE, came up with this idea, created these bottles, and ultimately paid for this pump?!
BOOKS
One of the schools that was involved in this project wrote a really neat book about the PlayPump system. It would be wonderful to create a number of these books to send to the children.
ART SUPPLIES
These students are thrilled to have this new pump, and they'd like to give something back. We're hoping to have time to work with them on creating cards and artwork to send back to the students in each of the schools here in the USA.
SIDEWALK CHALK
One idea we had was to have a "game exchange"-- we kids would send sidewalk chalk for our "RandomPrez" and our teacher to teach the kids how to play HopScotch, and then we're hoping maybe the kids would send back pebbles, along with instructions on how to play one of their games-- I think it's called "Qudoba."
POSTAGE
Some of the USA schools would like to initiate pen pal programs with the South African school, but postage is cost prohibative for them. We'd like to help make sure they can stay in touch.
SNACKS!
Kids like snacks at parties, and this is going to be a great time to celebrate! Maybe we could get them some cakes and lemonade or something! Our South African contact says that this is often done at pump-installation celebrations! :)
TRAVEL
Anyone want to guess how much it costs to go from Texas to South Africa? It's over $2000 JUST FOR THE PLANE TICKET! So any help to offset travel expenes would be awesome!
OTHER
Any money made above and beyond what we're able to bring to the school on our trip will be used to support programs like our water project that help kids help others through RandomKid. For more information on what children have achieved in the past year through RandomKid, please visit our IMPACT page.
PAYPAL INSTRUCTIONS: If you'd like to donate money to specifically pay for one of the above items, please be sure to note which item you want to support in the "notes" section of your online payment.
