The One Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

What I Learned as One Child FundRaiser Among Many

By Talia L., RandomKid, Age 11

grew into something bigger and different than I planned, probably because my neighbor made a website for me.  Because it was on the internet, it reached more places, and it unexpectedly grew into a place where kids, schools and youth groups across America reported how much they raised for hurricane relief (http://www.randomkid.org/rally.asp). Suddenly we kids were combining all our efforts into one big number, and we could feel the excitement and power of that.

I learned that my favorite saying is true, "If you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven't been in bed with a mosquito!" When I went on-line with my mom and read how much money different corporations gave to Katrina relief, I saw something that surprised me.  Did you know that kids across America gave more money to hurricane relief than almost any corporation? One of my mom's friends is an accountant and she added it up for us, and it is true:  Kids gave millions of dollars. And the thing is, we did it one coin at a time.
